Tony and his fox at Christmas Exhibition at The Kiln in 2011

Farewell to Tony Fisher

Tony Fisher - a Farnham-based photographer and one of our most beloved and longest standing members of The Kiln will be missed by every one of us. He passed away on Tuesday 25th of November 2014.

Tony had been a member of The Kiln and previously at Guildford Adult Education for no less than 37 years. Photography was his lifelong passion and he produced some amazing images over these years.

Looking at photographs that he left with us, we affectionally remember him and tremendously miss the gentleman who was witty, intelligent, always keen on learning some new tricks on Photoshop, and always returned with some new pictures from Venice or Portugal after long holidays with his lovely wife.

It gives us immense pleasure to show some of his images, including the legendary spaghetti-eating-budger that was published on Daily Mail. We would like to pray for his soul resting in peace and wish to thank him for all our happy memory that we shared with him.

article from the Surrey Advertiser, 7th Feb 2014.

Article on Jan Ramscar's Photograms and Group Shows

Jan Ramscar, our fellow members at The Kiln Photo Workshops, was featured with her recent work on The Surrey Advertiser, on 7th February.

After building her professional career in science, Jan started producing unique images that show flowers and seeds in intricate detail, but in vivid, unfamiliar colours. Jan successfully achieved her Licentiateship Distinction from the Royal Photographic Society in 2012.

top image: image by Jan Ramscar, Grass Flowers

These images are photograms, which are produced without the use of a camera. The technique goes back to the beginnings of photography; pioneers such as William Henry Fox Talbot and Anna Atkins.

'Working in a darkroom, I shine light through the flowers and seeds and onto the photographic paper. Because the natural subjects themselves act as filters for the light, the images that result are in startling, otherworldly colours and are of arresting beauty. Each photogram is unique and unrepeatable, much like a monoprint in Art, and so these images cross the boundary between photography and Fine Art.' - Jan Ramscar

Cyanotype and Argyrotype Workshop

(Cyanotype print by Jim Stewart)

Thank you for those who joined us for the Cyanotype and Argyrotype workshop on 21st April. (Please visit our PHOTO GALLERY for more images from the workshop)

Also we would like to thank our guest lecturer Peter Renn for all his expert help.

It was great fun and enjoyable to try alternative historical printing techniques. The cyanotype printing process renders monochome images in striking vibrant blues, whereas the argyrotype gives deep earthy browns.

If you are interested in Historical printing processes at The Kiln, please contact Abbs 07973282418.

Alternative and Historical Printing Processes: Saturday 21st April

(Argyrotype print by Peter Renn)

(Cyanotype print by Peter Renn)

Saturday 21st April
We will be hosting a workshop in Cyanotype and Argyrotype printing.

Running the workshop was guest lecturer Peter Renn. Peter makes images for professional clients as well as personal work in a wide variety of fields from architectural, fine art landscape and portraiture to documentary, fashion, editorial and sports photography.

He uses all formats, with cameras ranging from pinhole devices, through pro digital equipment up to a 20" x 24" plate camera. He is a professional analogue monochrome printer, making exhibition prints for photographers, galleries and archives. He also has a special interest in alternative and historic processes, as well as building experimental cameras.

Cyanotype
A very old process, invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842. It produces an image in Prussian Blue (ferric ferricyanide) and is relatively simple to use. Used widely for copying drawings and plans (it is the origin of the term ‘blueprint’) it can be used to make photograms and contact prints using UV light as the exposing source.

Argyrotype
An improved version of the 1899 Kallitype process, modernised in the 20th century to give more consistent results. The prints have rich brown tones on absorbent materials such as watercolour paper. As with Cyanotype, it is possible to use this process without access to a darkroom as it requires only UV light (sunlight), minimal chemistry and a supply of running water.

During the workshop participants will experience acetate-negative making, paper preparation and coating, exposing and processing prints in both processes. Don't miss this unique opportunity to learn these interesting historical printing techniques, and to see your own photographs as they would have been produced a century ago!.

Please let us know as soon as possible if you are interested in attending this class. Thank you.

Black & White Toning Workshop

(bleached & sepia-toned print by Jim Robertson)

Thank you for those who joined us for the Special Black & White Toning Workshop on Saturday 3 March. (Please visit our PHOTO GALLERY for more images from the workshop)

We tried Bleaching, Re-Printing, Sepia-Toning, Gold-Toning, and Selenium Toning. It was great fun and enjoyable to try alternative post-production with traditional techniques. Toning is one of the very unique post-productions for black & white gelatin silver prints, which changes the characters and colours of the prints chemically. Toning also makes the prints archival.

If you are interested in Toning and Bleaching at The Kiln, please contact Abbs 07973282418.
Each chemical is subject to availability. We would like to arrange working space for Toning too for your Health & Safety. Thank you.
